MLK Community Day of Service

Saturday was the Martin Luther King Community Day of Service in Greenville. All of the county's different organizations worked together to help clean up and beautify locations all around Greenville. My friend, Kristy, and I chose to volunteer at Cedar Grove Baptist. Cedar Grove is the oldest church in Simpsonville and was started by freed slaves at the end of the Civil War. The cemetery has graves dating all the way back to the time of Reconstruction. The only problem is that many of them were covered by brush and trees. We worked all morning clearing trees, thorns, leaves, and limbs. I wish I had taken a before and after pic because we uncovered a ton of baby cedars, which will be uprooted and replanted around the cemetery.
Afterwards the YWCA presented a picture of Dr. King to the congregation of the church. It looks like this will be an annual thing at Cedar Grove Baptist!

Kristy is picking our next volunteer project. I can't wait to see what she finds!
